The Gift of a Book

I’ve mentioned before how important I feel it is for children to have books. If you have had the ability to meet a toddler raised with reading and books and one who hasn’t had that opportunity, you can see first hand, rather quickly, the huge difference that books make. When I was in grade school I read as many books as I could get my hands on. I used it as an escape and a way to imagine myself in worlds far more exciting than my own. Reading helps children learn proper spelling, grammar, and syntax as simply a natural product of reading and writing.

Enter: Cool Mom Picks. CMP is a super fun blog full of product reviews for moms. If you like hip, fun stuff for you kids, it is definitely a blog worth following. Recently, Booda Brand was featured in this CMP post. To learn more about their clothes for kids, check out her post. The reason I’m mentioning Booda Brand is that for every sale they make, they donate a book through Room to Read. Room to Read works to help improve education in developing countries. Their programs include building school rooms in villages, establishing bi-lingual libraries full of donated books (called Reading Rooms), sourcing content from local writers and illustrators to create children’s books, and creating computer rooms for students. Check out their website. They’re a fantastic group of human beings.

  1. I totally agree here! Books are magic. I think it is important at an early age to cultivate an imagination in children. So many young people today are caught up with technology and gadgets. My sister who attends a state university was shocked when she first got there and found that hardly any of the students knew how to relate or even have a normal conversation. They are so caught up with their ipods and phones.Coincidentally, I heard on the radio not that long ago that employers were having to train their employees on how to have face to face relations with clients. Many of them out of college do not have this skill!I read books to escape now and then. I still do! ;)

  2. One way to captivate a child is to create a book specific to them. My grandchildren love them. The oldest at 10 is an avid reader and the 4 and 2 year old are reveling in their books. I truly believe if you teach a child love of reading they will always succeed academically and real world. You have a nice site with a very good feel to it.
