What I’m Reading

I’ve finally buckled down on the pregnancy books. Most of them are divided up by trimesters or weeks, instead of regular chapters. That makes them useful as reference books, but to read them straight through almost seems pointless. Why read about things in a pregnancy book that don’t yet apply to you? Well, my personality won’t let me slowly pursue five books at once, so I’m checking these bad boys off my list. I just finished What to Expect When You’re Expecting and I’m not sure I’ve ever been more relieved to finish a book. I plan to hang onto it for a little bit because it has some redeeming qualities as a reference. However, it is definitely not a book I’d buy for a baby shower gift unless the pregnant person was 15 or not a reader. I was annoyed with that book pretty much for its entirety. Moving on…
I picked up this collection of poetry quite a while ago. I don’t even remember where or when, but it’s been on my shelf for a long time. I’m finally diving in. Narrative poetry sounded like a good switch from what I’ve read recently. The craziness of Alice Sebold’s Almost Moon and then the emotional drain of reading Last Journey both left me needing something with brevity. I like that with narrative poetry, I can usually have the same enjoyment of a novel-like storyline and characters that I get to know and care about, without the attachment. It’s length keeps me from becoming too invested. I look forward to reviewing this collection and hopefully it’s the little break I need.
My mom recently sent me a Janet Evanovich book, but it is 14th in a series. I would like to read the other 13 before I crack this one open. She suggested that its light, humorous nature would be a good reading for when the baby comes. She said they’re funny and easy to pick up and put down without getting lost. I’m not usually a huge fan of funny books, except Laurie Notaro, so I can’t wait to see how I like Evanovich. Also, whether I remember reading anything on a lack of sleep (or am capable of reading anything coherently at that point).
What are you reading?
