Strike Against SOPA January 18, 2012

Just a quick note to let all of you know that Reading is Sexy will be down tomorrow in solidarity with the Strike Against SOPA. If you don’t know what SOPA is or aren’t sure about it, check this out:

eReader App from IndieBound!

If you haven’t heard yet (I didn’t until today when @devourerofbooks tweeted about it — check out her awesome blogs), IndieBound has created an Android app for downloading and reading books from independent booksellers on your Android-based devices (and coming soon to iOS devices, too). Any tablet (Fire, Galaxy, etc.) or phone with Android 2.1 or higher can be used to buy eBooks via this app (Google eBooks, specifically) right from your favorite local bookstore.

There’s a list of booksellers to buy from, but if you need a suggestion: River’s End Bookstore in Oswego, NY. If your favorite local bookstore is not on this list, mention it to them.

Kindle Fire is Shipping Now!

If you pre-ordered a Kindle Fire, it will be arriving soon. If you’ve been waiting until they are in to buy one, then today is the day to order yours!

Full color, multi-touch 7″ Kindle Fire Tablet just $199
The Kindle Fire includes free cloud storage for all your downloaded content, a fast web-browser, extra-wide view angle (just like the iPad) and a free month of Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime gives you no charge 2-day shipping on all Amazon.com items, unlimited access to streaming movies and TV shows, and full access to Amazon’s Lending Library: 5,000 titles, including over 100 Best Seller Titles that you can access and read FREE.

Just for a fun little comparison, here is the 1st Generation Kindle. The very first Kindle was released in November 2007. Priced at a whopping $399, the Kindle sold out in just over 5 hours. It boasted a mere 250MB of internal memory and no wi-fi. Dear clunky, 80s-looking device, thank you for putting yourself out there and plowing a path for devices like the Kindle Fire. Four short years later, ereaders are truly little bits of lit-tech beauty.

First gen. Amazon Kindle, originally $399 (now available used around $65)

The White Male Fck-Up Novel | BOOK RIOT

If you haven’t yet signed up for Book Riot, this is the kind of great article you’re missing: The White Male Fck-Up Novel: A Guest Post by John Warner | BOOK RIOT.

Book Riot had a very hype-driven, vague launch. I couldn’t really tell what it was going to be, but signed up on the promise that (paraphrasing) it would be more fun than Goodreads or other, quieter book communities on the web. I expected something more social network driven than what I saw when the site finally launched: a bunch of articles posted by “book rioters.”

Their “About” page is tough to find, so for your information: find out more about Book Riot. IMO some of the posts are exceptional, thought-provoking, funny, interesting or any combination of those. I have come across a number of other that weren’t. In fact, I didn’t make it past the first paragraph of many of them. I’ll be hanging in there though. I love the idea the site. It appears somewhat inspired by Huffington Post style: News-style posts and layout, but with a focus on community, discussion and commentary.

I’m truly interested to see how Book Riot grows and improves.

Buy a Friend a Book Week

BAFAB happens the first weeks of every of January, April, July and October. I don’t always post about it (because I can barely keep track of taking my vitamins in the morning), but I love this event. Books are wonderful gifts. I especially enjoy reading any book a friend gives me because they loved it so much, even if it’s a genre I usually don’t like or something I’d never buy myself. When someone you care about hands over a book they loved and wants to share that with you, it really is something special. In the spirit of sharing the love of books, Buy a Friend a Book. Amazon.com now allows you to Give Kindle Books as Gifts, so it’s even easier to buy your friend a book.

My BAFAB for my brother today was this book. The Kindle e-book gifting was easy as pie and faster than waiting for something to ship.
