Read for the Record

Today is Jumpstart’s Read for the Record. You can go here to sign the pledge saying:

I pledge to read Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney with children in my life on October 6, 2011. By sitting down to read, I’ll be joining more than 2 MILLION people in calling for an end to America’s early education achievement gap. Together, we’ll stand up to demand that all children receive the quality early education they deserve.

Llama Llama Red Pajama is this year’s book. New this year is the option to read the book online for free (in English or En Espanol) thanks to We Give Books. We Give Books is a Pearson Foundation and Penguin endeavor that gives free access to children’s books online. Completely free children’s books that are appropriate for ages 10 and under. When you read books online at We Give Books, you are also helping a literacy charity give books.

Tune into The Today Show this morning to see their participation. The first time I posted about Read for the Record, they were trying to break their record. This year they estimate more than 2 million participants!

Push Comes to Shove

Concord Free Press has released their second free book. Push Comes to Shove is in my reading pile now. I’ll review it as soon as I finish it. In the meantime, you can fill out a form on Concord’s website to claim your own free book. Hurry because they are only giving away 2,000 copies and they do go quickly. Push Comes to Shove was penned by Wesley Brown.

FP has a great interview with Wesley Brown in the FAQs section. Wesley explains why he chose Concord to publish his book and how he chose the 1960s as the era for this novel. From Concord’s interview, “Push Comes to Shove begins at the end of the turbulent 1960s, when NYC Police shotgun an unarmed member of Push Comes to Shove—a radical group of activists, lovers, and dreamers based in a gritty Lower Manhattan tenement. This killing triggers a series of violent reprisals from more extremist members—from a subway bombing to kidnappings to a showdown in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Brown traces the group’s evolution through the Vietnam Era and beyond. Some compromise their youthful ideals. Others die for what they believe in.”

If you happen to be in the New England area of the US, you can see Wesley Brown reading at Labyrinth Books, Princeton, NJ, Wednesday, May 27th, 5:30 p.m. (with Stona Fitch), at Back Pages Books in Waltham, MA, Thursday, June 4, 7:30, or at Jamaicaway Books, Jamaica Plain, MA on Friday, June 5th at 7:00 p.m.

Update on Give+Take and Concord Free Press

I just received an email from Concord Free Press. I blogged about them and their free book opportunity here. They have officially run out of copies of Give+Take. They will be introducing a new book early next year. In the meantime, they’re still looking for readers to chart their donations and pass the book on. I plan to have finished reading this book by January and then hold a contest in January to give it away. Be on the look out. Here is the email Concord sent out:

Thanks again for being part of the Concord Free Press. Our first novel, GIVE + TAKE, has already inspired more than $20,000 in generous donations to causes and people in need, from Boston to Edinburgh to Tunis. And that is just the beginning.

If you’ve made a donation and passed along your book, thanks so much for doing your part. If not, now is the time to:
- donate to a group or person you want to support
- chart it on our web site (www.concordfreepress.com)
- give your book away

We are completely out of copies of GIVE + TAKE. So we’re relying on you to pass your book along. The holidays are a great chance to give it to someone new, and to get them involved in what the LA Times calls “an unusual Robin Hood-style publishing model.”

Early next year, we’ll be announcing our second novel, which will out in May. And we will also be introducing an edition of GIVE + TAKE for the iPhone. More news soon.

Meanwhile, be sure to check out the long list of donations to great causes on our site. And if you want to support Concord Free Press, there is a place to donate directly to us right from the site as well.

Have a great holiday season,

Concord Free Press
