New Concord Free Press Book

Concord Free Press

Concord Free Press

Concord Presses second book, Push Comes to Shove, was recently reviewed in The Washington Post. Push Comes to Shove and Give & Take have raised $78,000 in donations already. They are all out of copies of the second book now, but their next release is due out next month — The Next Queen of Heaven by Gregory Maguire (Wicked).

CFP is also looking for donations to keep putting out these free books. According to their mailing: “You can donate on our web site or send along a check to Concord Free Press, 152 Commonwealth Ave., Concord MA 01742. And since we are officially an IRS-approved, non-profit philanthropic foundation, it’s completely tax-deductible.”

Update on Give & Take and CFP

Review: Give & Take (First Book)

Review: Push Comes to Shove (Second Book)

Review: Give + Take — Stona Fitch

Give+Take is the first novel published and “sold” for free by Concord Free Press. I finally finished reading it. I intended to review the story, but I’m going to go about this in a different way than I usually do.
Give+Take is about a jazz pianist named Ross Clifton. Ross is an extraordinary talent for playing jazz…and theft. He spends his time playing in piano bars across the US and finding lonely women to seduce and rob. He also steals BMWs when diamonds are scarce. Ross once had everything: a fabulous apartment, an incredible piano, a girlfriend and even a cat. He had all the things people strive to gain. He was miserable. He began to live the role of a modern day Robin Hood. But how much money helps a person? Does it really help? What makes a person’s life worth living? Where is the line between right and wrong?

Give+Take challenges the notion that bigger and better is the point to living. It is a interesting ride through a piece of Ross Clifton’s life that changed him forever…and just might change yours, too.

The novel is a quick read. It’s not too wordy or overly descriptive, but Stona Fitch caresses the English languages like Ross tickling the ivories. It’s a captivating novel that left me feeling inspired and thoughtful.

Now that I’ve reported my donation (book #993 by the way), it’s time to pass this book on. Instead of handing it over to a random person, which I think would be awesome, I’m going to give it to one of you! Here’s the deal:

Comment this post with what you think about the book/publishers idea, this pay it forward kind of thing. Make sure that there is a way to contact you in your comment (or by putting your email address in the field while commenting, this will keep it private).

I will select a winner Sunday February 22th using the number generator at Random.org. Good luck.

Update on Give+Take and Concord Free Press

I just received an email from Concord Free Press. I blogged about them and their free book opportunity here. They have officially run out of copies of Give+Take. They will be introducing a new book early next year. In the meantime, they’re still looking for readers to chart their donations and pass the book on. I plan to have finished reading this book by January and then hold a contest in January to give it away. Be on the look out. Here is the email Concord sent out:

Thanks again for being part of the Concord Free Press. Our first novel, GIVE + TAKE, has already inspired more than $20,000 in generous donations to causes and people in need, from Boston to Edinburgh to Tunis. And that is just the beginning.

If you’ve made a donation and passed along your book, thanks so much for doing your part. If not, now is the time to:
- donate to a group or person you want to support
- chart it on our web site (www.concordfreepress.com)
- give your book away

We are completely out of copies of GIVE + TAKE. So we’re relying on you to pass your book along. The holidays are a great chance to give it to someone new, and to get them involved in what the LA Times calls “an unusual Robin Hood-style publishing model.”

Early next year, we’ll be announcing our second novel, which will out in May. And we will also be introducing an edition of GIVE + TAKE for the iPhone. More news soon.

Meanwhile, be sure to check out the long list of donations to great causes on our site. And if you want to support Concord Free Press, there is a place to donate directly to us right from the site as well.

Have a great holiday season,

Concord Free Press

Give + Take

Some of you may have already heard of Concord Free Press. From their website, you can take part in a new experiment. Think: Pay it Forward. The company is distributing 1,500 free copies of Stona Fitch’s novel, Give + Take. You don’t pay shipping or anything. The novel is totally free. Concord simply asks that you make a donation to a charity or to someone in need. You can see who has contributed and where on their website. If you make a contribution, tell Concord about it.

I am really excited about this experiment and requested my free copy of Give+Take a few weeks ago. My original intent was to read it, then blog about the whole thing, but I haven’t finished it yet. I’m too excited about Concord Free Press to hold it in. Once I finish the book, I’m going to review it, and then I will have a giveaway right here on my blog. One of you lucky readers will be able to win a copy of Give+Take. I will send it right to your house, so you can read it and pass it on. More on that later.

For now, the book is pretty interesting and I can’t wait to see where the story goes. The novel follows Ross Clifton, a Jazz pianist. He is an accomplished thief, but gives all the money he steals away. But like all naughty acts a person can do, eventually it will catch up to him.
